Default New "cigar" leaf looks dead. ?

I can't seem to find it now, but a little while back someone had reported a plant that was brought indoors to be shooting up a leaf that was brown and appeared to be dead.

Debate about whether dead leaves can "shoot" aside ;-).... has anyone encountered this and did it resolve itself?

Any suggestions?

Plant in question is under grow lights and doing okay otherwise. Looking rather spindly. The new leaf apears to be slowly rising... just the part that is visible appears to be turning brown and drying up.

I haven't been overwatering. Only when the soil is quite dry. In comparison, the other basjoo next to it is still going great guns.
