DEFINITELY remove the pot before planting it in the ground. If you just plant the pot in the ground, there really isn't much benefit of doing that since the roots are still limited by the pot. Once fall comes, you can dig it up using the pot you wish to repot it into as a guide for how much soil to remove. You will lose some roots, but the effectiveness of the summer growth will still be apparent in the plant and the corm.
