Default Re: Basjoo potted?

South facing is absolutely the way to go, especially during winter. I have a fairly large red "rojo" in a pot I overwintered inside in a south window. It was about a foot when I bought it, now its well over 5 feet tall. It slowed growth in the winter some, but did keep putting out new leaves. I had to take it outside to hose it off a few times and sprayed insecticidal soap twice to combat the damn spider mites, but it is now back outside and doing fantastic!

I also overwintered another naner whose name escapes me at the moment, but that one has seen two winters indoors in south windows and is on its third summer outside. It has leaves similar to Basjoo but the younger leaves have that splotchiness on them, and it has a reddish trunk. It was a pup of the original banana which died after I separated the pup. It has not broken any growth records, but its now over 4 feet tall and has a pup of its own that is about a foot. It too is once again outdoors and loving it. I have 4 Basjoos, but have never tried them indoors to overwinter as they will easily survive here and come back with a vengance the next spring, provided they are in ground. I may try to overwinter a couple in pots in doors this winter and I suspect that they too will probably do just as good as my others. I think the key is as much light as possible.
