I don't know gingers too well, but I think the plant you are talking about is Alpinia zerumbet. I don't believe there are any toxic gingers, and this one is definitely not. It may not taste like the common edible ginger, but it won't hurt you. But you should be careful if you are taking street plants because you don't know what chemicals were used on them potentially. If you know that there have been no dangerous chemicals used, you can experiment with it, it will not hurt you.
