If your just composting table scraps you might want to consider getting some red wigglers to speed things up. You'll have nice worm castings in no time and your plants will love you!

Do some google searches for red wigglers, worm composting, worm castings, or vermiculture. There are tons of places to buy ready made vermiculture tubs, worms etc, and loads of helpful info.
