Hello Harveyc...
I have musas in the ground for three seasons now. They overwinter very well here in South Jersey, esp with this seasons warm winter. I have about five huge trees in the backyard and five or so in the front. Both are full sun well-drained soil. I have Dwarf Cavendish in pots, as I won't dare keep those outside in winter, plus I like to see them in the cold winter days to remind me of summer! It is amazing to see how musas and cold hardy palms are really catching on here. We also have a little house down the shore in Cape May and everywhere you go, you see bananas, trachys, monkey puzzles etc...
Our winter was insane! We had only three nights in the teens and app only 20 in really hard freezes. The ground never really got frozen like most years. I regularly opened my musa enclosures during the days and reclosed at night. I never even bothered to close up my trachys with permanent protection and they look great! I have lotsa large red canna leaf plants in teh ground that I dig up every year, but the ones I missed from alst season are all emerging unscathed too..
I will def update my profile this weekend and post some pics as well. I tried to post pics in an album but I was unsuccessful. Gotta mess with it later. Chat soon.
