yes will add a little protection,,no one is trimming them when they grow in the wild,or the big mats people neglect and still get good fruit from....you only really need sun on the leaves and warmth in the ground..does the pstem really not get much sun in a larger mat??i wonder how important sun on the p stem really is,as long as growing leaves get the sun..maybe somone will do experiments on sun or no sun on pstem
