Default Basjoo- Trim leaves?

I have a few Basjoo's growing outside near the house. Was wondering if trimming the lower ( and smaller ) leaves helps the plant grow faster or taller? They are about 3 1/2 feet tall now, was thinking that cutting the lower leaves back close to the stem, might give the plant more energy ( not the right word... ) to grow faster, since it does not have to feed the smaller leaves. I would leave the top canopy of five or six larger leaves alone. Any ideas? Thanks!!!!
