a healthy plant or tree will have almost a fresh smell to it mixed with an earthy smell. if it smells like wet cardboard dont buy it. i will pull a plant or tree out of the pot and smell the roots before i buy one, i dont care if im in a gh or if im in walmart. you get funny looks but i dont want to buy a tree or plant that has the beginnings of root rot. you can smell the rot one it has started. i have done this with all but 2 of my plants that i own. and of the 2 i was lucky to get a good one out of the two. the monstera i bought friday i didnt take out the pot because it had cracked the pot and i could smell from there. yall might think im nuts by i swear it works.
