I went out looking for sources; there's a nursery in FL I've never dealt with that has hardy avocado trees for $29.99. But I didn't post because it sounded like East Texas doesn't allow imports though many people grow them there. If that's the case, seeds are his only option.
However, a friend (who has a chartreuse thumb because everything grows spectacularly for him) has 2 thriving saplings that were rooted from branches gathered from an established tree; they have yet to produce but are obviously clones. Me? Cheap gardener and collector of "good" stuff abandoned by the side of the road (green or not) would be cozying up to people with trees and requesting sticks.
