I should add, if the paddle leaf or flag leaf have arrived, obviously, don't do it.
And if you think the plant may be NEAR blooming, look closely at the most recent leaf. If the most recent leaf to unfurl is slightly smaller than the previous, that's indicating its near blooming. If you cut it a few feet shorter, you might cut the inflorescence away, and you will not be a happy camper when your plant dies and you get no bananas.
