Have a trellis or wire mesh next to a fence? You can grow the climbing variety, such as "Climbing Sugar Melon" aka Rampicante Zuccherino.

If the problem is fruit rot, that's a tragedy. If it is from humidity-generated mildew, I control that with pre-emptive strikes of Spectrum Immunox.
