Default Potted Hedychium Coronarium (White Ginger) in Zone 6a

The best reason to grow hedychium coronarium (White Ginger) is for the strong fragrance of its flowers which, to me, resembles that of coconut. The best reason to grow it in pots is so you can bring it indoors where it will scent a large room.

It is easy to grow outdoors in the summer or in a greenhouse year round because it is an invasive species (weed) from Asia. Its the national flower of Cuba. See

I started mine from rhizomes bought on Ebay which I planted in pots within my greenhouse in early May and moved outdoors in early June. The flowers began opening on Oct. 1. I will move the plants into my greenhouse within a couple of weeks and sometimes bring a flowering pot into my home for the fragrance. I will also experiment with uniconazole treatment to shorten the plants.
