Nothing at all wrong with growing basjoo in a container, if properly done you will definitely get that desired tropical accent around your pool.

As far as overwintering:

Time to put the bananas to sleep for the Winter

...and then expand your research with search terms such as overwintering, winter storage, etc and you will get all the advice you need to come up with a plan for yourself.
