No protection at all. Center of the yard too. I fattened them up in October/November with a lot of water. I think the first layers around the p-stem freezes. The ice insulates from the cold the next layer in.
Close examination of a sheathing around the banana pstem looks like cardboard.

That is a relatively high number. Throw in a layer of ice and you add more insulation. I suspect that multiple freezes would do the most damage to a dormant banana.
