It wasn't so much all of the Gros Michels in the world, as the monocultured ones in the big plantations in the banana republics, like Panama and Ecuador.

This said, private collectors kept it alive, and the ones that survived the Panama disease outbreak are still grown here in Ec, but more as a personal banana than a commercial one. In the farmer's markets here, they're called Sedas (silk bananas) and remain one of my favourite full-size nanners.
