Regarding basjoo growth.....

Is the only way they grow taller from putting out more leaves, or is there any internal growth where the psuedostem strethes out? I understand the main stem is comprised of tightly wrapped leaves. Reason I ask is that mine are putting out leaves like crazy, but only growing somewhat in height.
