Mark i think its just the particular plant that determines the amount of colore on the leafs and pedeols iv not heard of any thing one can do except for Siam Ruby's which often have to be in full sun to gain the deepest red on its leafs. that being said id try to give it as much light as possible without burning its leafs up. when picking out a plant if theres a choice id try to get the one that looks the best aways but really that goes with out saying right? Musa and all Bananas for that fact have lots of variation
