Do you use shade cloth at all, or just the protection of the mat?

No shade protection at all. I put about 6 cubic feet potting soil with each banana. The soil here is also crap, hard clay and decomposing granite. The mat protection would also be minimal as most of my bananas are spaced pretty far away from one another. I just use massive amounts of water. Drip irragation system.
