I may be wrong guys, but from what I gathered from my friends in Bkk, the
'Giant Indon' Variegated is supposed to be a variegated form of
Musa balbisiana. When I asked how it got to be in Indonesia since it is not found there, they have no answer. This plant then found its way to Thailand, same as the
Indon Red aka Siam Ruby. I have 2 of these plants now from Bkk costing me only 1,000b each, which is approx $28. This was a special price from a close friend.
The other plant which I got for the same price is the
Thai Gold/Yellow variegated which is actually a
Musa acuminata subsp siamea originally found in the wild. Apparently this plant's seeds germinate to a good percentage of variegated seedlings.
During the last few years there have been a lot of exotic plant
trading between Thailand and Indonesia. The Indons were way crazy about the Thai Aglaonema hybrids and foliage anthuriums. Many weird stuff exchanged hands for crazy prices. It's good in a way because as a result of the exchange of plant materials there were a few new hybrids of the aglaonema made with the Indon species.
