Well, I would think it to be a fire hazard since one must consider a broken bulb or a short caused by water. If you are determined to use a sheet, I would soak it in a baking soda solution first. Then allow it to dry before wrapping loosely around your banana plant. Consider something to keep the lights from direct contact with the sheet. Like a tomato plant cage or some light, metal fencing material such as chicken wire.

You would be better off using something fire retardant however.
