Default Idea....

What would happen IF, I had a corm with 3' p-stem on it I dug a hole 4' deep, put well draining compost/soil in the bottom 1' then set the corm-ball on that and filled in the rest up to ground level with just plain mulch and straw no soil? Has anyone tried anything like that or ever thought of trying that as an experiment?

(Sorry, got ideas running in my head ATM!)

OR, what if someone were to try to put that heat wire/cable stuff they use on roofs to melt the ice in the ground surrounding the corm but not touching it?

Anyone with input can gladly add to this, since I'm looking at doing some experiments this coming winter for someway of having naners in the cold up here and still maintaining a nice looking yard (i.e. no tarps, leaf / mulch piles, plywood boxes) since my neighbors can get a bit finicky about overall neighborhood appearances regardless of season or reasoning.
