I have bad clay, thats why i figured something well draining between the corm and the clay. I have a coworker that buries his father's dwarf fig every year for winter. What I'm thingking is keep it buried the whole year...that way the corm has less chance of freezing since it will be deeper and let the p-stem thats in the ground for 3' take the brunt of the cold weather. at least if I put loose compost and mulch and straw mixed it will act as a decent insulator as well as draining water away from the main structure of the plant.
