I always end up with a rotten looking p-stem that then starts with new growth pushing out in the spring, and thats with mulching with straw.
We just took the hay off my little banana bed the other day and I've got several D. Orinoco's pushing up out of the ground but so far nothing on the bronze laterita. It's too early for me to give up hope on it though. The Canna Intregue and Canna Musafolia is popping up also. We covered them all back up with just clear plastic totes now. I was afraid it would start to rot under the hay bales with the warm days.

I'm an optimist on trying to get fruit in these zone challenged areas also. I know it won't happen outside ..... but I haven't given up hope indoors with lots of lighting, warmth and humidity.... oh... and a fan! I've just described my spare bedroom. My children think I've gone crazy and my grandchildren think I'm cool.
