I have done both of what you asked under full tropical sun with the small to medium size plant and corm under a shade netting held up by a wrap of metal netting.
Even though there was minimal watering by my staff, it grew well with good leaf output. I let it grow to a point until the plant protrudes from the netting. At this point it will be able to take care of itself. If you don't offer this kind of minimal shade, the plants will be retarded in growth for a long time until it is ready to take off with a good root system, usually 4mths or so. I have tried all sorts of weird ways to grow them. Don't mind the bigger leaves being cramped by the cage, it can't complain aloud! On the other hand, if it has a big spread of leaves, use 4 poles to make a mini shade area. Your call!
This is my Pisang Moon aka Gros Michel growing in a shaded wire wrap.
