Default First fruit from a new pup?

Is the first set of fruit from the original plant in a developing mat usually not as vigorous as subsequent fruitings?

I have a Raja mat with about 5 staggered size plants and the original plant has fruit but only about 20-30 fingers and I expected a lot more. The first pup from this original plant is already taller than this original one that is in fruit. Leads me to think that you shouldn't expect full fruiting capabilities from the first plant?

Opinions?
