There is a book called "Bananas you can grow". Never read it myself, but I have heard some of the info in there is outdated. Nevertheless, it probably covers the basics.

I also like "Palms won't grow here and other Myths", wich cover many other plants too, as well as some bananas. As in the name, the book is about growing exotics in cooler areas.
