Re: Musa California Cold Hardy
I've bought several of the CCH from Shawn (I assume you've seen his latest listing on eBay) since he lives just about 25 miles from me and he's also the brother-in-law of Jeff Earl who popularized the California Gold.
I saw about 7 CCH with bunches of fruit in Shawn's back yard last winter and I also saw a leafless plant with a bunch of bananas when I was at his place about a month ago to buy two more (that plant flowered late last year and lost its leaves from the winter frosts. That plant was about 10 feet tall as were the others I saw with bananas last summer. Jeff Earl's California Gold, on the other hand, fruit around 6 feet tall (though some may be taller). I don't know which is hardier but I think it's probably easier to get a shorter banana to flower in areas with frosty winters. I plan to grow several of each to evaluate further.
If you've got room in your greenhouse, I think it would be wise to bring your California Gold into the greenhouse since you're in zone 7. If it survives outside in zone 7 it would still probably die back to the corm.
