Default Miniature Pineapple - how long to fruit?

I have a miniature pineapple plant indoors, under a 75 watt compact flourescent fixture, which is now 3 or 4 years old. No fruit yet although it stays nice and warm, over 80 in the room most of the time. How long can it stay this way and live? Should I try to force fruiting with an apple slice placed in a plastic sack over the plant? Or just let it be, sort of in stasis as it is now? It continues to put up new leaves, they blush, but no fruit. Help!
