I am living in The Netherlands. About half of our country lies meters under sea-level.
So are we. I am located on what is called "the new land". This land was taken from the sea in only the previous century, in the decade around 1942. We are surrounded and safeguarded by and fully dependent of dikes....
Until recently (2004) we also where not permitted to kill a single mole......!!
See the location on Google earth etc..

I have had a few moles in my Zen-garden ...... you would not believe the damage such small, little, tiny animal (monster see: Moles) can bring in only a single night. I am still trying to find out what a Taoist or Buddhist does in these situations. I think I have hit a taboo with that.
Well, basically, all you have to do is to call a sadist, tell him to get rid of the mole in gentle way and leave for a week.

Just kiddin', moles can be very unpleasant visitors. Especially in your vermicompost boxes. I lost way too many on that. I found out, that when building a fence, you have to make it about 45 to 60cm into the soil as well. That keeps not only moles, but also other animals away...
