Aye, fruit production is definitely a driver in my decision...

So what does affect fruit production due to crowding? Is it competition for water and food amongst the roots from the various plants? Couldn't you just feed and water more in this case? Is there any empirical data on minimum distance between plants with no ill effects on fruit production?

It does sound like I need to thin out the number of total plants as I'd assumed...

If I do 5 I can arrange them so that each plant is 4' from the nearest plant and 2' from the concrete edge or 3.5' and 2.5', respectively. With 4 plants in this area I could get away with 5' away from nearest plant and 2.5' from edge (or many other variations of this)...
