Banana Curious in Austin

Hi, everyone.

I was so pleased to find out about this group! I just got online to learn how to take care of the Dwarf Cavendish I bought.

My main question at this point is about the possibility of planting mine in the ground. Austin is zone 8b. I thought I would build a portable greenhouse-type cover for the colder months here. Any thoughts or input?

It's probably more feasable to cut the leaves off, wrap the pstem in burlap, and wait for summer.

Welcome aboard! We're all bananas here.

Welcome. I planted my DC's outside last year and I'm in zone 6. I dug them up and brought them inside to overwinter. I am anxious to plant them back out this year.

Welcome to the organization Mary anne!

I am in zone 10 we don't get many freezes, so I will let those more experienced in cold area banana culture answer.

Welcome aboard once again! :2239:

Welcome to the .org Mary Anne! :goteam: The DC is a good choice as it is small enough for a pot and it can be taken in for winter. Check out the older threads, there's a lot of talk about the DC. All the best! :ha:

Mary Anne,

Greetings from a fellow (transplanted) Texan! Welcome the orgainization. You will definitely need to protect your DC during the winter. I live south of Houston and my DC's still get damaged by the cold-it's Zone 9 here. You'll probably have to provide extra water this summer given the lack of rain you've had out that way lately. We finally got a little last night but are still pretty dry here.
