Default Bought two Musa Basjoos... Why are they suffering?

So a month ago, I bought two of these plants and I spent a week letting them get used to full sun by gradually letting them in it for longer. I planted them in the yard (south eastern Nebraska) with a good amount of mulch and compost. They've been holding on a bit, but a couple days ago one just shriveled away and the other is still struggling. I've watered it once a week, and the soil under the mulch is always slightly damp, so it shouldn't be waterlogged. Too much sun? Too hot? It's been hot. Mid 80s (F) to mid 90s. I'm not sure what I'm doing that's making it struggle so much.

That looks like a tissue culture plant which are generally much weaker and need more care than a real pup would. It will not survive in full sun like that.

I would highly suggest potting it up and keep it in a shaded area so it can recover. Let it actually grow some before you start introducing it to full sun.
1 Week transition is too fast as well you can't rush it.

Once it's actively growing you can slowly start introducing some sun. This acclimation process can take several weeks. If it stops growing then you know it's too much.

I've grown several Tissue Culture bananas following this process and they are now huge healthy plants in full sun.
This process usually takes me a few months as well. Be patient and you will be rewarded.

Good Luck

Hey, thanks. I had no idea about tissue culture plants. I'm assuming this is a different form of propagation. So I suppose that means I'm digging it up and repotting. Hoping it doesn't mind being replanted again. Thanks for the info, Valor_X!

Yes Tissue Culture is essentially micropropagation cloning done in a lab.
Because of this they are much cheaper but require much more care and time to grow compared to a Banana plant that was naturally grown and separated from a mother plant.

The plant does look stressed but it should recover after being re potted.
Unfortunately this may take time and set the plant back longer than it normally would have had you kept it in a pot from the beginning.
I know this because I did this exact same mistake when I first started this hobby. I didn't give up on my plants and they eventually recovered even after losing their original leaves.

Make sure the soil is well draining in a pot. I like to add lots of perlite to my potting mix. Water it more frequently than once a week so it can stay moist without being overly wet.

Alright. I got it repotted and I've got it placed on my deck under a tree. I'm pretty sure the other plant is gone, though. It turned to mush down to the base. Unless you think it'd be worth trying.

If the other plant already turned to mush down to the base then chances are it's gone.
Tissue culture plants have virtually no rhizome yet where they can grow again from.
If you have another spare pot it wouldn't hurt to try but I wouldn't keep my hopes up and would start looking for a replacement if you wanted to grow 2 different plants.

always worth trying.

but you have run out of time for this year, so here's what i am going to suggest to you. research cinncinana. he is in ohio and knows basjoo ampng alot of things, very experienced bananaerer. there are alot of people growing them but you have to do the research. if your plant dies and you want to try again, stay on here and eventually someone will sell them. if not pm them. a corm from here is better than tc's. but stay on here and learn, this is not like growing corn or carrots or garden peas, bananas are a whole lot different.
