Since you are at a lower longitude than most of us, the growing conditions will be more constant than it was for the people who did VC research in Georgia!

Longitude runs north and south. Latitude runs east to west. He is at a lower latitude, not a longitude.

Now, do you see how easy it is to skew data with a simple mistaken word?

That's the problem with "official" research. File that one piece of incorrect data and everything else is fubared.

Thanks for catching my 'mistake'!

Based on my google map:

Puerto Rico is located 18.2 deg N and 66.6 deg W
Philly is located 40.0 deg N and 75.2 deg W

Keith is at BOTH a lower longitude and latitude than myself.

I agree that latitude has a large impact on temperature. However, the Earth is not just round! We also have a rotational axis which is tilted 23.5 degrees. Because of this, lower longitudes typically have warmer temperatures. Just check the data!

I disagree that scientific data is fubar. I think interpretation of the data results is where more issues occur. We can always 'cherry pick' data for the conclusions we want or expect. Just like the pollsters did when they failed to predict daddy to win the election.

I realized it was a possibility so I specifically chose plants that I thought were young enough that early blooming would not be a problem. Onced it was obvious I chose poorly I just decided to collect the available data. I've always been curious if the fruit would mature properly and how they would taste, which thankfully was great.

I'm not in a rush so saving a few months to get a smaller bunch is not an acceptable tradeoff for me, but for folks with a short growing season a smaller bunch is better than no bunch at all.

… that chopping the top off of an older banana plant will often cause it's bud to quickly emerge.

This is a photo from the gallery and if the member had left the leaves attached, their results would certainly have been better.

That is truly amazing! About how many new growth leaves did you remove on a plant? Did you keep removing new leaves until a flag leaf was present?

This is a very good question.

Because of the height at which the pseudo stem was split the plants never had the time necessary to produce leaf blades. Everything was pushing out very quickly because the existing leaves at the top of the plant were undamaged by the splitting and were still feeding the plant normally. And now it no longer needed to force it's way through the entire length of the pseudo stem. After many petiole canals, the first recognizable leaf blade to appear had grooves which meant it was a bract.
