Pup transplant

Hey guys just looking some insight. I have a potted basjoo that has 4 pups now. The biggest being 6-8” with about 6 leaves. I wanted to remove and re plant them but not sure if i should wait until fall closer to when I’ll be overwintering or if summertime is ok. I’m in zone 6b Massachusetts. I just don’t want to stress the mother plant out too much and kill it. Thanks

I took 4 pups off of my Basjoo last fall right before the cold hit and grew it inside. I am not sure if you did it now just how much this would affect the mother plant. You wont kill it but could shock it into slower growth.

Not saying this is right, but if it were me, and I was planning on overwintering indoors, I would leave the pups for separation next year. Probably ok to do it now but my experience is small pups that are not well establish don’t always over winter easily. But of course that depends on where/how you are doing it. If you have a bright, warm indoor space in which they will actively grow, then less problematic. If a cool garage or someplace similar, more difficult. And I have found the pups seem to establish more quickly in the spring. But that is me with my admittedly limited experience.

My plan was to keep 2 of the pups and grow them inside the house during the winter. I was going to let the mother go dormant in the garage or basement and hopefully it would pick up where it left off in the spring.

I would say go for it, do an experiment, n of 1 as they say, and see what happens; I don't think it's big risk. I would just make sure you have enough growing time for the scar on the mother to heal, which at this point you probably do..(I don't have any experience in your climate;-)...and then tell us all about it next year when the results are in.

Putting them in the ground now will give the plant some time to settle before it becomes dormant. Not disturbing the roots during transplant helps the transition.
Plant in a well prepared/amended hole.
Your plant will still be active until the ground freezes.

I’m going to give it a go. I ordered some foliar spray called iv organics that is supposed to help with transplant shock. So once that comes in hopefully this weekend I’ll do some cutting. Anyone have experience with this product?
