Question question on wintering over potted basjoos

I have 10 basjoos in pots ranging in size from 6 feet (7" psuedostem) to some that are 3 feet with a 2-4inch stem.
What is the best way to winter them over in the winter. I'm wanting to cut them back to around 2 1/2 feet tall, keep them dry, and put them in the dark, cool basement. Will this work? I've also thought of putting them in the garage for the winter (cut back and dry). It never gets below freezing but has a couple windows. What is the best way? I don't want to try to bring them indoors with leaves since a lot of mine last year were devistated by spider mites.
Years ago, I had a cavindish that I dug up and put in a wash tub and kept in the basement. Watered 1-2 times during the winter, then planted it in April. It worked for years until it was just to big to dig up and bring in.
Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like you are in zone 10 at least, so your idea about using the garage should work fine, especially with Basjoos. Good luck!

I'm surrounding the ones I have in the ground with straw bales and filling in with mulch, Then topping them and capping with an upside down trash can....I'm taking one in a pot and putting it in the garage and watering 1-2 throughout the winter. Its my first winter with them. Hope it works.
