Fastest Growing Banana Variety
I'm not sure if this question has been posed before. What is the fasted growing Banana Variety from seedling to flowering and setting bananas? Living in a cool climate it would be nice to be able to see a plant flower in its first year.:)
Thanks Phil |

Re: Fastest Growing Banana Variety
How fast would you say it takes to flower in your area?
Thanks Phil |
Re: Fastest Growing Banana Variety
From a well established, good size sucker, about 17 months to flower.

Re: Fastest Growing Banana Variety
There are no easily obtainable edible Musa that can flower in one season. There are a few out there but they are impossible to get in the US, except 'California Gold' which reportedly can flower in one season but that is also hard to come by. The only ones that will do it are the ornamental ones like Musa velutina and Musa ornata.

Maybe it will get faster, but it's still under 12 inches and I've had it for 2.5 months. |

So far the Namwah is the fastest growing for me. TC to flower in 11 months here in zone 8b. |
Re: Fastest Growing Banana Variety
VC have always grown well for me, but not the fastest.. I have an unknown that smoke's in vertical growth.. It's faster than Namwah.. I'm pretty certain its not a White Iholena. If I'd have to guess its a DB..

Re: Fastest Growing Banana Variety
I can't stop my Lady Fingers from taking over the garden. They are lovely but now I have aquired more rarer varieties, I need to remove them. Problem is they grow and grow and grow, sending out suckers and becoming these tall, towering things. I can't bring myself to kill them so I am trying to give them loving homes but even that is not easy (they are already very common as it is here).
I planted a few small suckers in December 2011 and now each one is about 4 - 5m with at least six 1.5m - 2 metre suckers. They haven't flowered yet but they grow taller before they do. My Cavendish Williams never grew taller than 20cm in my old house in the 7 years I had it there. I move 30K (17 miles?) away and it went from 20cm to 3m and fruiting in about 13 months. They are all rapid growers but I can't stress how much ample water and fertilizer makes a difference. Temperature to a lesser extent in my experience - they grow in winter almost as fast as in summer here (Sydney, Australia) |
Re: Fastest Growing Banana Variety
My dwarf cavendish flowered in just about 12 months from planting. I think the plant was about 2 months old when I put it in the ground. I send a pup up north to New England a month ago, I'll let you know next year if it has any flower ;)
