My Namwah Tall and Kandrian!
 

Hi!

Thanks to the great generosity of Bob,i am now the proud owner of a Namwah Tall and a Kandrian pup!:woohoonaner: Thank you very much Bob!!!:nanadrink:
Last Friday,i received a nice,long and heavy box from Bob!I had asked him for a tiny Namwah Tall pup and he sent me 2 huge pups instead,about the same diameter my Ice Cream is now!!!:woohoonaner: The Kandrian was a surprize add and a more than welcome one as i love Tall growing bananas:woohoonaner:

They are both showing new growth but slowly. Even my Ice Cream is growing real slow so i find it normal and think they will be fine! Looking forward to new leafs!!!!

Once again, Bob comes through as one of the most generous members of the org. Your corms are around the same size- large- as the IC I received from him, Kostas. Good luck with them.

Just to update on their condition,the Kandrian is finally opening it's first leaf(half of leaf actually :ha: ) and is growing at a good pace since I moved it to my heated basement under fluorescent lights! The Namwah Tall grew fast when I first potted it up but kept dying back from time to time till all new growth was black. Now that's in the basement,it seems to grow slowly but I have yet to see any live tissue pushed out. Hopefully when I return from my vacations It may be unfolding a leaf as well!

I will take and post pictures when I return home from my vacations!

Don't worry about the slow growth of the Namwah Konstantinos..... It's more important to establish plenty of root growth first. Don't be afraid to whack it back till you see fresh green inside. I've done it many times and it seems to stimulate new green growth.

I hope its doing just that! I am not too worried yet as only the new growth of the cigar was dying back while the pseudostem remains almost intact with just a couple of cm dieback at the top at most. I remove the dead tissues around the cigar by gently pulling them away so as not to damage more live tissues and cause more dieback. That way i keep it from getting jammed from the shrinking dead tissues arround it and its pushing,just hasnt pushed enough to reveal any live tissues yet unfortunately...Looking forward to healthy new growth!!! :woohoonaner:

They are Chambeyronia macrocarpa(Hookerii), Lemurophoenix haulexii, Coccothrinax alexandrii var. alexandrii and Cocos nucifera from Key West(probably Jamaican Tall as its fruit is huge). Most are to be ground planted in Pyrgos when they grow some or spring comes.

Funny, I spendt afternoon repotting palm seedlings and among them several Chambeyronia macrocarpa :)

Hard to forget these germinators with their camouflage-like spike and hard roots(like most all New Caledonian palms!)! I think they will be a risky grow long term at your place though and with their slow growth,any damage stays for a long time...

I wish you success with them,they are beautiful seedlings and stunning palms!!!


Btw,i am really behind in seedling potting ups...Today I potted up a Chamaedorea tepejilote ''Blanco'' which germinated almost a year after its conspecifics in an insect infested germination bag i had lost hopes on a long time ago...All of a sudden,i saw a green leaf in there... :woohoonaner:

Kostas and Dalmatiansoap.... have either of you ever heard of or maybe seen a "Cretan Date palm"... Phoenix theophrastii? I've been reading a few books on hardy palms ( as well as aquiring some seeds and small plants ) this winter and read about this one. It looks to be kind of a smaller than a Canary Island variety and a few degrees cold hardier.

I might jump in for an answer and I'm sure Kostas and also Ante know about the Cretan Date Palm Poenix theophrasti. It's a hardy variety and seeds are available from rarepalmseeds.com. Plants are also on sale in Europe by various shops, but this won't help you a lot, I guess.
You'll find a lot of info on Google and maybe also plants for sale in the US. Otherwise you have to try from seeds.

Phoenix theophrastii is the cold hardiest Phoenix sp. and looks somewhat between P. cananariensis and P. dactylifera with its blueish leafs and relatively fat trunk. I have never seen any from close unfortunately. I need to go to Crete for vacations someday soon!

If a Phoenix sp. stands a chance at your place,that would be the one! Use a very well draining soil(rocky and sandy) to prevent rot from high rainfall coupled with very cold tempratures during the winter.

Wow!! It that a common practice to hack them off at the top like that? I'm new to 'nanners', and I've never seen that done. I bought 5 different ones (one was about 80lbs, and two were arond 50-60lb), and none were ever subjected to that - nor would I have ever thought to do that to them. Seems kinda harsh. My three largest ones never dropped any leaves from the transplanting process, so I don't think they ever had any stress from it. The lopping off of the top would surely have stressed them out quite considerably.

Thanks all, I'll be checking out the links and likely getting some seeds of this variety soon if I can't find a small plant.
Yug, this is a common practice for those storing bananas in colderclimates as wel as for practical reasons in shipping. It must stress the plant some but , they seem to recover fine.

Hey Bob,
I have one Theophratii seedling so fare and it didnt stop with growth during this cold period. They are not common palms but I hope there will be more of them as time pass. Beeing Date palms they must be easy to start from seeds but if U can get smaller plant with decent price...
