Don't smoke, but have an awful sense of smell which certainly affects taste perception. It's amazing the diversity of shapes and sizes of the same varieties in my own yard, and even more so of fruit grown 20 miles from where I live. The Maoli group here always has those well rounded ends.

What restaurant do you own/work at. I am coming out to Costa Mesa for my Mother's 80th birthday in October. We may try your "raunt" who knows.

Rob,
Lol, I hear ya on on the sense of smell issue... in my line of work as a chef, people who smoke I don't trust as their taste buds are screwed for life and usually are off on the true subtle flavors. I agree on the diversity especially in micro climates only miles away seems to make such a difference in flavor, size, shape, etc..

maoli group, do you mean the the boys from maui, kana? or something else.

Maoli is a banana group that the a'ea'e is part of. The other well known one is Ele ele. It's just a group type like Pome, Cavendish, etc. The other major Hawaiian types are Iholena and Popoulu (the best known being Hua Moa).

A few articles to substantiate its true and in my own personal experiences with dealing with food prep and how smoking affects the taste and smell relates directly to how your food is seasoned and well it tastes.

My passed Sous-chef's who smoke compared to those that don't, their food seasoning is affected and off for the chef's that smoke where as the food is not seasoned properly or et al. Hence the reason I don't hire smokers ever.
You should believe it, its true!

Does the hua moa have kinda of a tart with a lil sweet peach overtones flavor to it and is it a long plantain?, I remember having something boiled and fried like that not sure if it was Hua Moa, does that sound like the taste of Hua Moa? I appreciate the info on Maoli group.

The Hua Moa is classed as a cooking banana, not a true plantain. I finally got talked into letting a few go full yellow and cut some up on my bkfst cereal. Surprisingly pretty good --- like you say --- sweet peach overtones and a bit tart. Also firm texture. Most of the time I go for twice fried fully green plantains. So much that I can't wait for them to ripen. lol

Tostones with white rice and red beans plus BBQ chicken adobado. One of the best meals on the planet. Served with fresh watercress salad dressed with just olive oil and salt. Freakin' yum yum yum!!!

That sounds delicious Dan. Ok then I've had the Hua Moa then, it was really a great tasting banana IMO, the peach flavor was nice. I prefer the twice fried as well, I've started making it as a vessel for sandwiches. Its been a big hit in the restaurants the passed few years. Thanks for the info.

My 2nd 1000 fingers that is really more like 50 fingers. I think these need much more fertilizer in the future. Also killed off this plant, as I already have 2 others. This was bought from Aloha Tropicals as a Golden Pillow and is the 2nd plant from them that turned out to be 1000 fingers, which I've never ordered. This plant must have put out 10+ pups that I've mostly sold.

11 months TC to flower, and 5.5 month more to harvest. Fast growing and zero corm weevil damage. These seem like a pretty hearty cultivar. Fruit is good too!

Namwah sold as Misi Luki. Not quite as large as my other tall Namwah. 45 lbs, 101 fruit on 7 hands. 5 months flower to harvest.

That plant was HUGE.

It makes my Giant 20 Foot Morados look skinny, and Morados don't even bend in a cat-1.

Does the PK have a weak pseudostem?
