What did you plant today (bananas)?

This should be a fun thread!
I wish I started it when the site started over a year ago. It would be really cool to look back on now. But hey, may as well start it now, right? :)

Today I planted a Musa 'praying hands' into the ground. It was potted up for over a year.

What bananas, if any, did you plant today?
The thread for other plants, besides bananas, is here:

Does moving them up into larger containers count? I bumped up my 4 Musa thomsonii seedlings from 4 inch pots to 1 gallon containers this afternoon.

While not planting, my bananas and tropicals are starting to make their way indoors, since night temperatures are down to 44 degrees here... :santananer:

You are aware, given the time of the year, that the only people that will be planting nanners in the ground will likely be those in Florida or southern California, donchathink? I'm getting ready to move my dwarfs and younguns into the greenhouse for the winter. Most of those will go in the ground in the Spring.

Cheers,
Mike

Last week it was California Gold and Golden Rhino Horn. Yesterday, it was Poovan, Hawaiian Apple and Lady Finger. Still need to find a spot for Dwarf French Plantain and my Walmart Unknown. It WILL be done!

Yes, San Diego has its' benefits!!

I suspected you of making up the "Poovan" banana, so I googled it. OK! I admit I have a suspiscious nature. Anyway, it seems to be from Sri Lanka and southern India, w/ decent sized, sweet, bright yellow fruit, but I couldn't find a picture. It sounds interesting.
Also some negative stuff:
"it is highly susceptible to Banana Bract Mosaic Viral (BBMV) disease and Banana Streak Virus, (BSV), which cause considerable reduction in yield."
Do we have those diseases in the US?

Yeah I was skeptical on the "Poovan" as well. Obviously not an English speaking culture that named that one. :07:

Today

I planted my Ingens seeds from Christian Port.....anyone have any luck with these? I am excited. :jalapenonaner: (Not Bananas- Alpinia Zerumbet "Variegata")

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?

Ingens probably wont do good here, otherwise I'd try them.

Today I planted an ~20lb unknown corm in the "unknown patch". I collected it from some local brush.

Next time you visit Disney, take along a shovel. I was at their Carribean Beach resort area Sunday, and there were bananas everywhere. About all I could recognize were Dward Cavendish, but there were several varieties.

Well, many of my seeds have sprouted. I now have several hundred seedlings! Especially balbisiana and nagensiumX have been easy to sprout. I keep them under high power NaH lamps at the moment, growing in small cells, and they seem to be thriving. Species include:

Musa Formosana
Musa NagensiumX
Musa Nagensium "True form" (From seedman)
Musa Flaviflora
Musa Balbisiana
Musa Sikkimensis
Musa "Helen"
Musa Velutina
Ensete ventricosum

The bigger sikkimensis, helens and basjoos are still growing outside, and will be protected in-ground. We have had an unusually warm fall over here.

Cheers

Jeff, very easy to germinate. And the most vigourous seedlings I have ever encountered. Each seed sent out 2 or more stems. A plant that was a seedling this April is now taller than basjoos that were one foot in April. But stems are skinnier. All in all a very handsome musa with red leaf-undersides, dark stems, dark green leaves, and powdery petioles. Here is a pic of my south-wall, but I am standing right in the way of the meter-tall Helens.

Today I put some Musella lasiocarpa seeds to stratification.

On Monday I put Musella lasiocarpa, Musa x paradisiaca, Musa sikkimensis, Musa ssp. 'Helen's Hybrid', Ensete glaucum, Ensete ventricosum, and Ravenala madagascariensis in water, and I'll sow them today or tomorrow.

That's great news, I definitely will try growing some of them. Nice pic of your banana plants by the way - the plant looks just like the photo on rarepalmseeds.com :2704:

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?

I'm done planting for the season even though I live in So Cal. I just don't have any room! I did manage to finally get my Aloe tree planted in the front yard after having sit in a big wooden planter for 2 years! I have at least 20 plants in containers that need a spot but I haven't figured it out yet. Next spring I'm going to be real busy removing extras and some undesirables and planting Heliconias, more bananas, gingers, plumerias, Passion fruits, a Page Tangerine, a Peach Tree, a Fig tree, and whatever else comes along.

Now that you mention it, i'd like to get some passion fruit vines growing. I think in the spring I am going to plant some more grape vines too.
