hi nana experts my siams leaves are misformd end brown spots. Whats the problem guys? Pleas some help. I think its a tissue plant.

if the leafs are coming out raged on the edges as if the leaf didn't completely form its a calcium deficiency brown spots are some times a sign of spider mites i don't think the two things are related

Hmm calcium. wat type of calcium can i ad.
Is it good for all nanas?
i use normal soil for flowers en vedgy.
i have some calcium for lawns is that good?

The lawn calcium should work just fine. I recently had a month and a half bout with 2 (out of 4) ailing Ruby Siams with a similar problem. They're very healthy now (after treatments). This is how they looked:



The gardener's finger should give some indication of size. Doe's yours look anything like this? Also, for accurate diagnostics, pics are crucial - could you post one?

Hmmm, most od my plants looks like that after spidermite attack and insecticide. So calcium will help healing them?

No, Calcium can't fix mechanical damage. It's like healing your broken leg by eating penicilin.

hmmm thats not the kind of brown spots i was thinking it was i thought it was more like browning on the edges thats defiantly spider mites spray with insecticide at 5 days intervals its important to do it at 5 days repeatedly until they stop as there life cycle runs 5 days and if you go longer the Little babies will lay more eggs and there in you all reinfected again be sure to spray soil and pots and floor around pots the craw after all there just like spiders

Heres what i know in a nut shell about SR and mind you this is mainly from watching my plant they like heat and i mean they like HOT heat mine doesn't grow well until its 90 or more they even do well here in 105 growing happy as a clam also iv noted that they like fertilizer more then any other Banana and i have many dozens of variety's they need a considerable amount of sun they will not turn deep red with out Sun although many people say they also burn and at the first of the year they do burn but they adapt after a wail there leafs get thicker and tougher the more sun they are in to a point i wouldn't put it in western sun thats to hot for any banana at least in my climate I live in the middle of the Mohave so most sun isn't comparable except say on the equator were the sun is the most intense on earth i water my SR 3 times a day when the heat is over 100 2 times from 90 and ones a day at 80 but thats my rule with all bananas here in the dry summers i just want to clear up one myth SR are like any other Banana mostly theirs no mystery to growing them like any Banana their some of the easiest plants on earth to grow other then grass LOL Crab that is LOL the thing to remember about Bananas is they all grow so fast that they have thees cycles of looking raged it doesn't mean the are dieing
and lastly not to be harsh but thees are food plants not house plants they are not going to look perfect unless you live in their natural climate so worry over ever spot and imperfection is just a wast of your love plant them water them every day and feed them monthly with a good quality high volume plant food like 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 keep them as cool as possible in the hot summers and as warm as possible in the cold winters and they will do just fine iven if they look like hell

Just checked out your photos. Super! Luv that mostly white Ae Ae, too. Never seen one quite like it, before. You're a good photographer.

Also, thanx for the info on spider mites. And I tend to agree, Siams Do definitely love the heat. Mine didn't start Really growing till we hit the hottest days of summer, here, and the reddest ones are the ones that get the most sun.

Going back to your question, I just now looked at your photo gallery "Collection2009", and if the plants you are referring to are the ones below, I think that your SR are fine.


It's just that what should be Red are showing Maroon, or Brownish-Red. I have had similar coloration in most of my SR. Temperature, humidity, and sunlight intensity, can cause a variation in that plant's growth habit.

Hi Yakuza, just took a very close look at my Ruby Siams & at yours. I see the same unusual spotting but it's been there all along & the plants are vigorous, healthy, & growing very fast.
I'm inclined to agree with Chong, I think it's just unique leaf colorations on a plant that Luvs heat & sunlight.
BTW, Your Siams & all 4 of mine are about the same height.

yes i agree with chong they look good just like any young SR should i tend to think that when there young they don't get that colorful min did not get red until this year its 1.5 years old now they don't get terribly big thou heres a picture of min as of today

sorry about the color there really quite cherry red but they look washed out after i transfered them to the orgs data base

I see the same unique spotting, too. Guess that's just normal for Ruby Siams & they are a recent discovery so, live & learn. Great cherry red colors, I can tell.

Mine looks exactly like that after to much water.
The Siam Ruby is not very tolorant to over watering especially in cooler climates. If it rains here for more than a few days (which of course it does) i have to put them undercover. Unfortunately in the UK they are a good house plant but not great for outdoors.

its not the water per say its the cool temperatures with the water that make for a deadly combo i think that generally hold true for all Bananas that I'm aware of

Agreed but the degree of suseptability (to what eventually becomes rot) varies greatly and in my exprience the Siam Ruby suffers more than most. None of my many other banana varieties suffer in the same way and i certainly don't have to put any of them under cover. In fact most of them thrive in it and pup like mad. SR is a very nice plant just not suited to very wet and cool climate.

Hi Alan

My Siam ruby has been outside since,1st of June and it has had no problems growing outside.When i have talked to people who own these plants in the UK,everyone seems to be getting different results,whether,outside in the greenhouse or inside your house.If you had two Siam Ruby's you probably get two different results.

I water mine about every two days and feed once aweek, but we avg temps around 90 for the last month.
