Moved my SDC Outside
Moved Caven outside, gave him a good watering and fertilized him with Fruit Fuel. I started this plant from a 4" potted pup in July 22 of last year as a gift from my wife, so he is now 11 months old.
![]() Taken the day I got him on July 21,2013. His pups are now larger than this 4" pup he started from. |
Re: Moved my SDC Outside
Be careful of the sun at first, I burned all the leaves off of my DC lol

Re: Moved my SDC Outside
You were right, it did not take long to show signs of burning, so I did move him to that southern under tree location.
And of course I had to take another shot of him while in this new photo op spot. |
Re: Moved my SDC Outside
I put mine under a tree too, with filtered light for about a week, then move them into the sun. I have a Thai black under a tree right now, hopefully it will be able to take full sun soon, and will develop the dark color on its trunk.

Re: Moved my SDC Outside
After being outside all summer the plant got so big I could not bring it back in so I had to plant it in the ground and put a plastic tent around it. The winter was rough on the plant but a pup is putting out some new green leaves. i look forward to how fast it grows from the original corm.

Re: Moved my SDC Outside
That is awesome, I was skeptical when I read that you were leaving it out last year.

Re: Moved my SDC Outside
A few practical questions for you from a newbie:
How large (gallons/inches) was the pot you last had him in? How tall had he gotten at the point you decided to plant him outdoors? What bananas have actually born fruit for you regularly? Thanks for posting your experiences here! Rick in CT banana wrangler :camelnaner::ropingnaner: wannabee.... |
Re: Moved my SDC Outside
RRedBBeard it was in a 21 gallon pot and was almost 3 ft. tall and filled out quite well. In my climate zone it has never fruited. I will post another picture when it has re-filled out some.

Re: Moved my SDC Outside
It looked like you had it going pretty well. If you had kept it indoors, would it have become unmanageable? I ask because my space here is probably about like yours, but I don't have the option of planting outdoors. In fact, If I could get away with a 15 gallon pot, I would. I posted a question just now, trying to determine just how large/awkward these plants can become, and while I'd like very much to grow a double mahoi, maybe I'm smarter to stick with a red dwarf, or maybe 'Truly Tiny'?
Thanks for describing your experiences with this. Rick in CT banana wrangler :camelnaner::ropingnaner: wanabee |
