![]() Hi all
I just wanted to share a picture of my two year old super dwarf cavendish. It is approaching 30" of pstem. Maybe it'll fruit next year - who knows. This plant stays on the porch in summer and is stored inside over the winter in my living room. When it is inside, I don't use addtional lighting - just keep it close to a window. I have been removing all new pups as soons as I find them. In hopes this will help it focus on fruiting. I have one pup replanted and don't need any more since I have no more pots.... Thanks for all the advice and information on growing these plants. Erik G near Philadelphia |

![]() Being a fellow SDC grower I especially enjoyed your post. My SDC just passed a year old and spent its first winter indoors. I however have no longer have room indoors this winter for her. I am going to try winter over the mother tree outside in the ground under a mobile green house.

![]() The plant is two years old from a tissue culture. It grew slow for the first few months but then started to pick up speed. I just use miracle grow or some generic fertilizers on it occasionally.
Hopefully it fruits at somepoint. I know people say they are hard to fruit so I'll just see how it goes. Perhaps next summer it will be ready because it won't grow much until then. @Pallen: Good luck keeping the banana outside. Did you run out of room where you stored it last year? Or it got too big? I lived in Corvallis for 2 years - and saw snow and ice both years. Hopefully your winter won't be that bad. Erik G |

![]() My wife bought it for me not realizing it could not survive winter outside well. She bought it because its ad said it could grow in our zone. So originally it was supposed to be an outside plant. We had in inside last year under grow lighting. It is just too big to be in our apartment sized home now. I am putting it in the ground to help protect the corm from freezing. I also hope a plastic covered PVC frame will help save some of the stalk from freezing. At least an SDC is small enough to completely cover. Hopefully we have a milder winter than 2013 was. If my SDC survives I a second year guess I can then update my Biography line from just a Container SDC Hobbyist to a General SDC Hobbyist.

![]() Good luck sige2050. The green house sounds like a good way to go. My plant may grow 2 or 3 new leaves over winter and probably looses just as many if not more.
Paul: Hope your outside SDC survives. I know OR gets lots of rain / moisture when the temps are around freezing. Covering the plant or preventing the ground from getting wet may help prevent rot. At least you don't get really high winds often - so your PVC covering should do the job. |
