Re: Two year old SDC
Being a fellow SDC grower I especially enjoyed your post. My SDC just passed a year old and spent its first winter indoors. I however have no longer have room indoors this winter for her. I am going to try winter over the mother tree outside in the ground under a mobile green house. :coldbanana: I have given three pups away but have plenty more here that came from. I too will have to start trimming pups as I see them. All but one pup of course in case the mother blooms or dies. I plan to bring one pup indoors ...just in case.

Re: Two year old SDC
I have one about that size, thats two years old, it was supposed to be DC, but I am pretty sure now its not, Oh well, its still a neat naner, but I hear they are harder to fruit.

Re: Two year old SDC
The plant is two years old from a tissue culture. It grew slow for the first few months but then started to pick up speed. I just use miracle grow or some generic fertilizers on it occasionally.
Hopefully it fruits at somepoint. I know people say they are hard to fruit so I'll just see how it goes. Perhaps next summer it will be ready because it won't grow much until then. @Pallen: Good luck keeping the banana outside. Did you run out of room where you stored it last year? Or it got too big? I lived in Corvallis for 2 years - and saw snow and ice both years. Hopefully your winter won't be that bad. Erik G |
Re: Two year old SDC
It would be cool if I could get mine to flower, I have 3 smaller ones I separated from it, maybe I could have a little banana plantation in my greenhouse lol

Re: Two year old SDC
Good luck sige2050. The green house sounds like a good way to go. My plant may grow 2 or 3 new leaves over winter and probably looses just as many if not more.
Paul: Hope your outside SDC survives. I know OR gets lots of rain / moisture when the temps are around freezing. Covering the plant or preventing the ground from getting wet may help prevent rot. At least you don't get really high winds often - so your PVC covering should do the job. |
Re: Two year old SDC
I'm brand new to bananas, but it's beautiful! I can't wait to get one for myself!
