I bought on Ebay:

If you look closely, you will see a medium sized flat rate box inside a large sized flat rate box. By doing that, the seller lost $21.90 - $15.50 = $6.40. Why would he do that?

thats funny... plus the box must have cost money also i would assume

maybe to contain smell or leaking/breaking open in transit?

No, the USPS gives those boxes away for free. You pay only when you ship.

The manure is odorless and doesn't weigh much, like 2 lbs.

Just curious but why would you buy horse manure online? Surely there is source near you where you could get it for free? I get dump trailer loads full free from a local stable, and i dont live in the country. You should find a source and save yourself the money

All of the manures sold at stores such as Menards and Home Depot are highly adulterated and labeled as "Composted Manure." There used to be a horse race track near me, but it is now gone.

I thought it was hay. If I had a choice, I would get digested alfalfa.

You have given me a wonderful idea! There is a county riding-trail system a few miles away. I'm sure there is quite a bit for harvesting along the way; maybe even a trailer with some in it. I wouldn't use it fresh, but it would be a good addition to my long term composting. Come to think of it, they rent horses there too. I'm sure there's quite a bit available. Hit Charbucks on the way home and kill two birds with one stone.

That's funny. We have a trail system utilized by a lot of horse people right behind our property and when we first moved here I would head out to the trails with my wheel barrow to collect the offerings. I think people thought I was a little blinky.

Now that I know the area I have other, less time consuming resources so I don't do it any more, but it was a great way to get my composting situation off to a good start.

When I lived in the Portland, OR area, there were so many wealthy horse people around that most of them practically begged to have their manure hauled away, it was great.

I load about 3-5 cubic yards at a time from the local stable.. much of it is already composted. I make a large pile in my backyard and let it hot compost for a month or 2 to kill the weed seeds. then I topdress with it. Plants love it
