Default Fertilizer question....

I was looking around for a really good quality fertilizer to use. It’s funny how there are so many kinds, brands, synthetics and natural. Some people say 20-20-20, 10-10-10, 19-19-19 and so on. It can be confusing! Now I currently am using 2 different kinds of fertilizer. They are called J-R Peters 20-20-20 and Biobiz Bio Grow. They seem to do really well! However, I did feed plants really hard this year! Maybe that’s why! What are some of the best fertilizers to use? Specifically what number to look for? Did I pick good ones? Thanks in advance!

in my opinion, always use natural fertilisers. be organic. go for mulches or seaweed extract or worm casts. idk its up to you but that's the way to go. but i would use a good balanced fertiliser. my friend used 10-12-9. it works fine. make sure it has good nitrogen for growth and potassium for fruiting
but hey its up to u
good luck

I think you are doing just fine with the 20-20-20. I use 10-10-10. Just make sure the fertilizer contains the micro elements needed for garden/plants. Then supplement potassium or nitrogen as needed for each plant. .... Specialty Fertilizers tend to be at a premium price and usually not economical for the small scale farmer or garden user.

Rabbit pellets are quite heavy on the nitrogen side, but they can take a pup and make it explode in height in a pretty short timeframe =)

Yes, that stuff is strong. I don't use it that often but when I do, I use it on everything that I can

that's great news. its the way forward environmentally. some people say its healthier for plants as its all-natural. but i understand the inorganic ways.
I've heard of that if im honest. with my bananas i use:
mulches eg hay, grass and woodchips
seaweed extract
fish blood and bone
chicken pellets
manures.

and i may sometimes get some other bits eg symbiotic fungi, worm casts and sometimes rarely peat moss. i try to avoid it though.

but good luck im on the same mission as you. the UK is tough though!

Yea ... that stuff really works. But there are 2 considerations one needs to think of.

1. You are never sure of the exact NPK being applied to the plants and where there or not enough was applied when using compost or grass clippings. Commercial bagged manure usually will state the NPK contained therein.

2. If using grass clippings and applying to plants else where (flower beds, banana mats), then eventually one has to apply fertilizer or manure to his yard to make up for the NPK being removed.

But yes .... when one fertilizes the yard each year, then reusing the grass clippings else where is like getting a 2nd use of the fertilizer already bought.

Yeah, I wouldn't go out of my way to get rabbit or chicken manure, but since I have rabbits and chickens I gotta do *something* with it lol.

But yeah, it's definitely not something I'd go hunt down with other alternatives available =)

I’m quite impressed about all the different kinds of things you use for your bananas! Thanks so much for the very nice message! Good luck to you as well!
