Anyone growing heirloom Sugar Cane

Greetings All,

I am a new member here. I am a farmer / restaurateur with a farm 2 to table type approach, but have also started using our facilities for educational purposes for school children to come out and see how their food is grown.

I have a lot to learn from this site about bananas but am also looking for some growing starts of an heirloom red striped chewing cane.

The kids love it when our vanilla orchids are in flower, or we dig up a clump of ginger and make a stir fry, or they pull out a purple carrot

Hello there.
I grow several varieties of sugar cane.
My wife's grandfather is a rancher/farmer. He's family has been growing cane and making
Syrup here in central Florida since before the civil war. I have a couple of ones that have been
With his family for at least 60 years.
A beautiful red stalked one and a purple. I also Have a black stalked variety that is fairly rare
And old.
The red and black are chewing canes, they are thinner stalked, and the purple is a pressing/
Juicing cane. It can get as thick as your arm. You can interchange them of course, those are just distinctions.

Having tapped a maple (not sugar) and made my own syrup while living in OH years after watching sorghum being made into a jar of sweetness when I lived in NC, I'd love to witness cane syrup being produced. (Purchasing a jar for personal use goes with that experience.) Is that possible in Central FL, bananaT?
