Beer, Beer, Beer
This thread is for those who appreciate this noble and ancient beverage to post their thoughts preferences, favorites and hates, etc.
While I'm not a heavy beer drinker, I do appreciate a good beer or dark ale. Lately I discovered a dark ale called Old Brown Dog, brewed by Smuttynose Brewing in New Hampshire. It was delicious! ![]() |
Re: Beer, Beer, Beer
I can appreciate a good dark beer though I tend to go for the "sweet" ones as they're called like Dos Equis, San Miguel, Dundee, etc. How does it measure up to those?

Re: Beer, Beer, Beer
I had 6 of them at a party. Very tasty, without bitterness but without the heavyness often found in dark ales or porter. Nice little citrus zing in the aftertaste. I'm not a fan of the others you mentioned.

Certainly not soon, but as the semester begins, I might be able to take some exquisite pictures. So Howard, if you could remind me around September 25th. ;)

Re: Beer, Beer, Beer
My hubby is a homebrewer. He makes the most awesome brown ale. He calls it honeymoon brown ale because the first time he made it we had just gotten married. It always turns out just slightly different because he uses some different brown malts in it each year, sometimes chocolate malt, sometimes brown malt, sometimes a little black patent malt.
This year we have cascade, nugget, willamette, and glacier hops on our hop vines, so this year I think it's going to be hoppier than usual! I'll take a picture of the vines later on and post it here. Have you ever tried one called Kostricher? It's a black swartz beer, and it's really black! We both love it, and surprizingly it's not strong or burnt tasting even though it's so dark. |
Re: Beer, Beer, Beer
A little over 30 years ago I made my one and only batch of home brew. It was not very good but I was operating with limited supplies and a tight budget as a college student. To keep it from getting too warm I kept my car boy in the bath tub filled with water with a slow trick of water. My roommate was good in tolerating this, waiting for me to remove it when he wanted to shower. It was a lot of work! Although it wasn't very good, us college guys drank it up anyways. ;)
Oh yeah, I should say that this was shortly after I took a Food Science course that taught me how to make wine and beer. :D |

Re: Beer, Beer, Beer
Another recommendation is for Hook and Ladder Backdraft Brown. The only problem is many of these are probably regional beers, so we all can't partake. But it's fun seeing what others have to offer.

Re: Beer, Beer, Beer
I am definitely a fan of brown beers, I do not like a lot of hops. I had a coworker that made a lot of beers and he had a chocolate brown that was awesome.

Re: Beer, Beer, Beer
For a generalized everyday kinda beer, Hubby likes Arrogant Bastard.
Shiner Black is an everyday too, Kostriker isn't bad...He likes Dark Island also. Draft - I like Harp or Bass Ale. Along with a couple of games of pool with friends... Don't get out but maybe 2-3 times every 2 years or so. :) A beer I tried on a whim...one of our 'try something different - pick 3 random bottles' week-ends at home... Three Philosophers. It is made with a Cherry lambic...Just WOW & YUM!! I have enjoyed Lindemans Kriek Cherry Lambic on more than one occassion, maybe it's just the fruity thing because I'm a girl!! :ha: Can't find it as readily down here - first found it at The Party Source in Bellevue, KY, WOW, what a HUGE selection in that store!!! Just my 2 cents!! Cheers!! :D ~Cheryl |
Re: Beer, Beer, Beer
Harp was my everyday beer for years. But that's the Irish in me! My son is now a Killian red man.

Re: Beer, Beer, Beer
My favorites are Scottish wee heavy beers, lambics, and barley wines...

Re: Beer, Beer, Beer
I good wee heavy is very nice, but if they are not lagered correctly can be really sweet. They have a really nice warming quality to them.

Arrogant bastard has a very heavy early hop flavor. It can be a bit much if you don't like bitter beer. Another really good one is Rogue Dead guy ale. It is not as bitter and has a good sweetness to it.
