What to do with frozen bananas?

So we went through the big freeze this January and all my naner plants froze. I left everything in place and am beginning to see pups. What to do with my giant brown corpses? I peeled a few brown...

Re: Weather forecast and banana ripening/ID question

Thanks so much! I'll bet you nailed it--my plant is 14 ft. Now looking through the plantain recipes on this site--and looking forward to trying some.

Weather forecast and banana ripening/ID question

Hi Banana Experts,
I have two questions for you.

The first is whether anyone can ID my banana--it was sold as a Cavendish but the fruit doesn't look like that to me--please see the attached...

Re: First banana bloom but have lost track of what cultivar it is.

Did you figure it out? Asking because it looks very similar to one I have in bloom/fruiting right now, and I'm straight west of you (Katy area).

Re: Ornamental nana - ID please

The instructions for posting in the members gallery (you have one) are on the Photo Gallery tab. I can't post pics there unless they are (by my iPhone's definition) small or medium sized--actual size...

Re: Not a Cavendish . . . so what is it?

I'm in Katy, just west of Houston. Bought this at a big box store so I wasn't expecting anything exotic. It was marked "Cavendish," and since they're not rare, that seemed logical. Silly me,...

Black sigatoka or something else?

My sweet African Red bloomed and put out fruit last month, and then Hurricane Harvey came for a visit. We made it though with nothing worse than some (very) tattered leaves, but now the plant--and...

Re: Can I get some advice about this Cavendish, which has just flowered?

Wow-it was marked Cavendish at the big box store, and since they're so common it didn't occur to me that it might not be. Any idea what it is?

Can I get some advice about this Cavendish, which has just flowered?

I live in Katy, just west of Houston (zone 8b, I believe). Last winter, we had three nights in a row below 25F, and most of my (newly planted) garden froze.
So . . . I was not expecting this...

Look at my African Red and Tell Me What You Think

After surviving Harvey, this African Red is showing a new hand every day. I have never grown fruit, so I have no idea whether this looks normal or not--particularly the black stripe I see on the side...

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)

Here is my little African Red (photo taken yesterday). I took a quick look this morning between rain squalls (we're just west of Houston and Harvey won't leave), and the flower and hands (a second...

Re: More Cigar Leaf Issues (pics)

It gets plenty of water--I just photographed it on a very hot day. All my naner leaves droop like that when it's really hot in the middle of the day, but they perk back up in the evening. Fertilizer...

What to do about the hurricane?

So . . . those of you in hurricane-prone areas, do you have any advice to share? I'm just west of Houston so we'll get (according to current predictions) tropical storm but not actual hurricane-force...

More Cigar Leaf Issues (pics)

About six weeks ago, I posted a question about the cigar leaf on my 10-ft-tall Cavendish, which had drooped badly after I fertilized. Since then, EVERY cigar leaf has come out somewhat bent over,...

Can anyone identify this banana plant? (Pics)

I purchased and planted this in April, and it grew slowly until just recently (the fertilizer last month may have helped). Today I was shocked to find that, as small as it is (4 ft), it's putting on...

Re: What is wrong with my Encete maurelli?

Al, thanks for the comment. I hope you'll update when you know how your perlite/potting soil intervention works out. I think I'll pull one of my Encetes up and check the roots . . . pretty wet soil...

Re: What is wrong with my Encete maurelli?

The mulch is dyed--the first time it rained, I had black water everywhere. Unfortunately, I can't remove the black mulch--there is WAY too much of it--I basically have a back garden rather than a...

Re: What is wrong with my Encete maurelli?

Oh, no--I have that mulch EVERYWHERE. Most plants are doing fine, but that spot gets some killer sun in the middle of the day. I suppose it would explain why the Australian tree ferns are frying...

What is wrong with my Encete maurelli?

I am so grateful for the advice I've been getting from the experts on this forum! One last question and I'll quit being a pest . . . at least for a while :-)
I have two Ensete Maurelli plants that I...

What is the maximum height for a pup you would cut free from a corm/mat to transplant? I have an ice cream (more likely a Namwah) that has two fairly tall trunks (about 13 ft. and 11 ft.,...

Re: Drooping cigar leaf

We mulched with black shredded cedar. The nanas are planted in about four inches of "rose soil" from a local garden center over brown clay. The clay stays pretty wet due to frequent watering (by us...
