Re: dave
Welcome, Dave! A banana plant is actually an herbaceous monocot, so is considered an herb. The actual banana that you eat is a fruit, so two of you are correct. I'm not sure how you could use bananas as a spice though...but I wouldn't even really rule that out either.

Re: dave
Hey Dave thanks for taking a moment to join the site, welcome aboard!
I think Frank nailed it with that reply. I've heard people consider the banana fruit to be considered a nut and it might be good to get that debated too. You can really throw them for a loop - go back and say "we're all wrong, it's a nut", then tell them that your really basically all right in your own way (hard to say it's not a spice, condering it is an herb and herbs usually = spices). Not that I'm saying it is a nut, just wanted to throw that out there as I have heard it and would like to hear thoughts on it as well. I wouldn't be able to explain why it's not a nut, for example, if someone asked me because I'm not totally sure either way. Great topic! Cheers

Nut/fruit
It is definitly a Fruit wether it is edible or not. In biology a Nut is considered
as a seed. I think Bigdog can give us the correct definitions. Ron |
